A rewarding culinary experience!

Are you passionate about cooking? Do you think you could make the cut in a cooking competition? Participate in the 2018-2019 Iron Chef Competition! A rewarding experience where you can develop your cooking skills.

Iron Chef is an annual culinary interuniversity competition between four universities:

  1. University of Ottawa
  2. University of Toronto
  3. McGill University
  4. University of Massachusetts

This year, the competition will take place in Massachusetts (Boston) from February 22 to 24, 2019.

Bring your talent to win the first phase of the competition and represent the University of Ottawa during the interuniversity culinary competition! By becoming a member of our kitchen brigade, you will have the opportunity to develop your cooking skills through the training offered by our skilled chefs and to enjoy a unique experience!

STEP 1 – PRELIMINARY CANDIDATE SELECTION – MINUTE TO WIN IT

This first test will determine the four best apprentices to form the uOttawa team.This is your chance to stand out and be part of the official competition.

During this 30-minute trial, you will be asked to individually demonstrate your basic culinary skills. You will be given a few minutes to complete simple tasks, for example, cutting up an onion. Don’t worry! We don’t expect you to be a Cordon Bleu graduate or a certified CAA/AAA chef!

STEP 2 – MANDATORY PRACTICAL WEEKLY TRAINING SESSIONS WITH THE CULINARY TEAM

The apprentice chefs selected after the first step will be invited to continue the adventure!

The uOttawa culinary team will be giving training sessions to help participants further their cooking techniques and skills. During these mandatory practical weekly training sessions, kitchen basics will first be reviewed in order to be improved. Then, apprentice chefs will be asked to take up new challenges.

The weekly training schedule will be determined by the culinary team and will depend on the apprentice chefs’ availability.

Location: Dining Hall, main kitchen

STEP 3 – MANDATORY TRAINING SESSIONS IN FRONT OF A LIVE AUDIENCE

Alternating with the mandatory weekly training sessions, apprentice chefs will show off their skills in front of a live audience. This will be the perfect opportunity to get used to working under pressure and to prepare for the February official competition.

 STEP 4 – ANNUAL INTERUNIVERSITY COMPETITION

Four universities will compete against one another during the 2019 Iron Chef interuniversity competition (University of Ottawa, University of Toronto, University of Massachusetts and McGill University).

Each year, one of the participating universities hosts the competition. This year, the competition will take place at the University of Massachusetts, in Boston, from 22 to 24 February 2019.

Each team, made up of four apprentice chefs, will perform different culinary tests. Renowned chefs and culinary critics will judge the participants and choose a winner based on criteria such as presentation, taste, texture and creativity.

The winning team will be awarded great prizes!

Conditions to register:

  • Be passionate about cooking and want to further your cooking skills
  • Have a valid passport (being able to travel)
  • No criminal record
  • Be available during the winter reading week (22 to 24 February)
  • Be available to participate in the three steps of the competition
